Easter Program

Tomorrow Night is our annual Easter program. Come celebrate the resurrection of our Lord with a fun filled evening for laughter and song. The program starts at six bring the whole family to encourage and support our students.

This month is kindness month. All month we are celebrating the character trait of kindness. Please help your children to understand kindness and the necessity of it in our lives. It has been a great month and we are working hard. I am very proud of all my students and encourage them to keep up the good work.

Next week is spirit week. Monday we have no school in observance of MLK day. Tuesday is crazy hair day, Wednesday is pajama day, Thursday is sports day and Friday is costume day. Also Friday is a half day. Due to the short week we are not having penmanship next week. We will still however have a spelling test and memory verse.

New Homework Policy

I will no longer be sending home completed homework. All grades are available on Snapgrades if you want to see what your student received on a particular assignment. This purpose of this is to cut down on paperwork going home. If a graded assignment comes home from your student you now know that it either needs to be finished for full credit, or it is a corrected Test/Quiz. Chirstmas Party!!!

Its the week before Christmas and we are going to have a blast. My first Christmas present to the students is no spelling or penmanship this week. Also on Friday we are having a class Christmas party. We are not do a gift exchange, but if your student wants to bring presents for their friends that absolutely encouraged. We are going to be eating delicious snacks and watching a movie to celebrate our entrance into a beautiful break. If you want to help or bring snack please contact Rachael Olin (Bridget's mom). She is our class mom and she is organizing the party for us. If you want to earn some easy volunteer hours, show up to the party to hang out. This should be a fun an amazing week as we build up to the celebration of the birth of our savior.

Field Trip

Pumpkin Patch

Our annual pumpkin patch field trip is on Monday the 18th. The cost is $3 per student which includes a hay ride, hay maze, petting zoo, pumpkin, cookies and a drink. If you can chaperon and/or drive I would love you. We go to the Country Mercantile in Pasco on I395. If you can help email me, text me, tweet me, tell me in person. This is one of the funnest field trips of the year so everyone is invited to join and bring the family. If you want to bring extra kiddos and they want a pumpkin all you need is $3 per kid.

Our third, fourth, and fifth grade classes will be attending the Academy of Children's Theatre on September 30th at 9:15am. The cost is $5 per person (including chaperons). ALL MONIES ARE DUE BY NEXT FRIDAY (17th). We will be watching the play Cinderella. Since our chaperons are limited to only two people, if you have a large vehicle I would love for you to drive. Math Grading

All of our math sheets will be worth 20 points. Your student will automatically receive 10 points for finishing his or her work. Then we correct 10 random problems in class and if they miss any they are deducted from their overall score. If your student has a minus 0-2 they are understanding the concepts, if they are getting minus 3-4 they need more practice, and if they are missing anymore than 5 they generally don't grasp the concept.

Our first field trip is on September 24th to Sacajawea State Park for Heritage Days. This is a fun and educational time. We will be learning about the history and culture of our area through unique recreations of the events. If you want to drive or just chaperone send me an email and let me know.

With fall knocking down summer's door, it is always wise to dress in layers. It is not uncommon for us to be freezing during morning recess and sweating in the afternoon. Please send your student to school with enough layers that they can be warm or shed if necessary.

Everyday at 10:00 am we will be having snack time. These are snacks are are provided from home if you choose to participate. A little snack goes a long way in improving focus and performance. Please only send healthy snacks with your student. They may eat what ever they want at lunch but during snack time we are going for energy boost, not sugar high.

Monday Math Final

I want to encourage the class to finish the year strong. Monday's math final will be worth 200 points. That's the equivalent of 2 tests. This is an opportunity to help bump up some math grades. The last math test was the worst our class has done all year and it greatly effected many student's grades. Don't let all of your hard work slip down the drain in the last week, finish strong and be proud of the work done.

As of this point I have met with every student and discussed science fair projects. They should all know what experiments they are doing and how they are doing them. As for the actual presentation construction I will be going over specifically what the student will need to have written and what each board should look like. I will send home more information about this next week. We will have time in class to construct our science fair presentations. The students will have access to the computers in our classroom if they need to use them.

Early Release Idea

At our last staff meeting we had the idea of getting out at 1:00 PM on every Friday to offer the staff more planning time. The way that we can swing this is by starting 15 minutes early on each day OR staying 15 min later each day. We know that this only adds up to an our but as it stands we are over our hours that we have to be in school and it would work out perfect. We understand that some of you may have concerns if we made the switch, so we are asking you for your opinion. Please vote on my poll to give us your opinion. Tardy/ Pickup Policy

We have rethought our Tardy policy for the elementary school Kids because we do not want to punish the students or the teachers when the parents are late.
The new policy is to give each student 5 tardies before the late fee is applied. From then on it will be $10.00 per tardy and/or $10.00 per late pick up after 3:10pm., $20.00 after 3:30pm.
The Kid Zone is willing to take late students for $4.00/ hour after school, but you must fill out the paper work, otherwise you will be charged the higher late fee by the school
Tardies may be excused by calling in your emergency #735-1002
The late fees will be added to your monthly statement
Check with your teacher if you do not know how many tardies your student has.

Survior Island

By now I am sure that you have heard about our Survivor Island activity. I just wanted let the parents in on what is going on. Survivor Island is a great way for us to move through the curriculum and still have class time to focus on applying language skills into Writing. The students receive a set of lessons that they MUST complete by Thursday. On Thursday we correct those lesson in a fun way and the students who scored really well (2 or less missed) receive a homework pass. The passes say SP or Pen on the top. This stands for Spelling and Penmanship. If the student does really well on Survivor Island and they receive one of these slips they can choose to skip either a Spelling assignment and Test or a week of Penmanship. They must hold onto these slips because they are not allowed to skip unless they turn them into me. They have my name and their name in pen so that they can not be forged and the students can use them whenever they want. Survivor Island is a fun way to get the students motivated to do well in language.

Science Fair

Today the students are going to be sent home with a challenge. They must come up with as many science fair ideas as they possibly can. I am asking them to write down every idea no matter the quality. This is an important step in the process. Thing to keep in mind when coming up with a science fair project. 1.) Projects are going to answer a question through experimentation 2.) Projects are need to be something that can be done at school and at home 3.) Projects only have about 2 months from start to finish. This is going to be one the coolest things that we have done all year and I really looking forward to the things your young creative minds can come up with.

Math Extra Credit

With the multiple breaks for holidays our class as a whole is missing quite a few assignments (especially in Math). I understand that it is difficult for a fifth grader to organize their assignments from day to day. Throw in some massive breaks and all bets are off. This said, the chance of actually finding these missing assignments and getting them turned are about as good as finding Jimmy Hoffa under Giant's Stadium. So I will be giving the students an optional extra credit assignment each week so that those who need to, can get caught up. The assignment will be due on Friday COMPLETED and the grade will literally plug into the missing spots in their grade. They will not be easy assignments but they will be doable. This week's math extra credit assignment is P.328 in the the math book. I will send a note home with all students who are missing assignments with the amount that they are missing. If you or your student can happen to find that assignment then feel free to turn it in.

This is just and FYI in case there is a two-hour delay tomorrow. I don't think that there will be, but you never know. If there is a two hour delay that falls on a half day, then school will be two hours long. Students will arrive at 10:30 and leave at 12:30 as scheduled. There will however be no AM or PM Kindergarten. I hope this doesn't happen but the Tri-Cities has unpredictable weather.

Homework Update

Given our shortened day and extensive play practice. We spent our day working on penmanship, language, spelling and anything else that may have needed to be caught up on. Pending a normal day tommorow all homework from Monday will be due.

Snow Delay

Christmas Party!

In celebration of our Lord and Savior's birth, our class will be partying on Friday the 18th. If you would like to donate some goodies or supplies contact Amanda Williams (Toby's Mom). She is spearheading the party planning. All families and parents are invited to join us. We will be watching the Vegitales (Jonah) movie. The party starts at 10:45 and will likely go until the end of the day. I have decided that we will NOT be doing a gift exchange for those of you who were wondering.

Tardies

Because of a recent rash of tardiness, the office has released this statement.
Everyone is unexcused unless they have an emergency and have called into the office. Student have to have a slip marked excused to be excused. Students with frequent patterns of tardiness will fall punishment to the prescribed solution below.
5 Tardies=1 day suspension
10 Tardies=3 day suspension
15 Tardies=5 day suspension
20 Tardies=Expulsion

If your student is not dress appropriately, he or she may not go out to recess. The highs are expected to stay below the 20s for the rest of the week. This is means coats and layers (required) hats, gloves, scarfs (optional but recommended). Thank you for the cooperation.

History Test Results

As a result of our weening from the book during tests, the scores on last weeks tests are lower than normal. I have given student an assignment to help with this score. They have to write out (in complete sentences) the problems they missed with the answers that are correct. If they missed any on the map portion then they are to hand draw and color a map with all location in the correct place. All student are required to due this assignment if they scored an 80% or below. If they scored an 81% or above it is optional (but highly encouraged). This will be the last time I give extra to help those who scored poorly on the test. It will become imperative that your student takes time to complete the chapter check up (correctly) and study the maps that are assigned. The assingnment is due Tuesday morning. Buy and Sell

Since our last Friday of the month is Black Friday and we will not be in school, we will be having Buy and Sell on Wednesday. Please look over the items which your student wishes to bring. This will ensure that they are school appropriate and something that is not of great value.

Next Week's Homework

Even thought I have posted a new spelling/vocab list, memory verse, and penmanship lesson. I will not be doing those things this week. All of the materials posted will carry over into the next week. Which means they will be due on Friday December 4th. Another thing to be thankful for!

Book Orders

This month's book orders are due to my by next Tuesday, Nov. 24th so that I can get them here in time for Christmas. We will not have a book order in December.

As you are out enjoying your Saturday activities. Take some time to meander through Barnes and Noble. Not only does Calvary receive a portion of all of the profit (if the customer says they are from Calvary Chapel), we also have wish lists for all of the teachers if you were wonder what kind of books we are looking to add in our classroom. Where else can you get Christmas shopping done and support the school at the same time? If you are at all planning on buying books for your children for Christmas then this is the time to do so!

Report Cards

My report cards are all finished and they will be handed out at conferences. Remember the first tri-mester conferences are mandatory. Make your appointment with Bobi in the office if you have not done so already. Also we will be letting out at 11:30 instead of 12:30 since there is no kindergarten on those days.

Letters to Soilders

Our students have written letters to soilders who are fighting for freedom in Iraq. Our students will be blessing our men and women who bless us and they will be sharing the gospel at the same time. Ask your student what they wrote to thier soilder and rememeber to pray for those who protect us.
